Buyer (Provider) Questions

How many people will use the PAV? (Back)

There are an estimated 28 million Americans who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled.  Many of these people use sign language to communicate, and rely on the video relay service to make telephone calls.  The PAV will ensure that these people have total communications access.

In addition, since the PAV unit integrates multiple communications functions it will be completely accessible to non-signers as well.

Who is responsible for the maintenance of the PAV once it’s installed at a public access site? (Back)

The installing agency may perform all of the maintenance on the PAVs if that matches their IT support structure.  Alternately, they may contract for CSD to provide support.

What advertising options do providers have for advertising on the PAV? (Back)

Providers can manually insert advertisements for each PAV device themselves or, with a Superpayphone subscription, the providers can send advertisements to Superpayphone to remotely create a playlist on each PAV device for the provider.

Can the PAV stream live video? (Back)

Yes.

Is anti-virus protection available for the PAV? (Back)

Yes.

Does the PAV come with a warranty? (Back)

Yes. There is a three year limited warranty. The warranty covers problems encountered during normal, reasonable use of the PAV.

What does the Warranty and Maintenance program include? (Back)

The maintenance program includes remote diagnostics and repair, as well as off-site equipment repair.  If the PAV is reported to CSD by the owner/operator as either non-functional, or not functioning properly, CSD or its designate will access the videophone remotely with the owner/operators permission, and conduct a series of diagnostics on the PAV.

Does anyone need to go to the machine itself to do repairs? (Back)

If the PAV can be repaired remotely, CSD will do so without any further intervention.

The owner operator will be responsible for verifying basic functional connectivity, such as confirming power to the unit, the unit being turned on, the unit being connected to the internet and/or PSTN.

What if the PAV cannot be fixed remotely? (Back)

CSD or its designate will send a replacement unit for the owner/operator to use at least until the PAV can be repaired.  The replacement PAV will be sent out within two business days.

Will upgrades to PAV software be made available? (Back)

Yes.  Upgrades including additional services and options will be made available periodically.

What components are being used in the PAV? (Back)

The PAV uses premium INTEL components.

How big is the PAV? (Back)

The PAV is 16 inches wide by 32.5 inches high and 4 inches deep. Estimated weight-80 pounds. See the PAV spec summary for more details.

What is SIP? What is it used for? (Back)
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol.  It is a communications protocol like H.323. However, SIP provides better firewall traversal and is the accepted standard for Voice over IP (VOIP) Services.
Each PAV is registered with a SIP gateway to provide the interface between the Internet and the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Is the PAV waterproof? (Back)

No. “Waterproof” implies that something may be submersed to a certain depth or pressure for a predetermined period of time.  The PAV is water-resistant to 95% humidity. Beyond 95% humidity open condensation is a possibility, which is why 95% water-resistance is the requirement for electronic systems intended for outside installation.

Are there Assistive Listening Devices included? (Back)

Not currently. However, the handset is amplified.

Can these units be installed at the beach? (Back)

The PAV is a strong, hardy unit and can be placed outdoors. However, it is suggested that the PAV be sheltered in some way.

What is the decibel level of the handset? (Back)

The sound pressure level of the receiver is 96dB±3dB.

Does the PAV function in extreme weather? (Back)

The PAV is a strong, hardy unit and can be placed outdoors. However, it is suggested that the PAV be sheltered in some way.

Is the PAV an IP Based machine? (Back)

Yes, the PAV is an IP based system that requires a high-speed connection. Dial up or similar low-speed connections will result in poor quality image. We recommend at least 256Kbps upload and download.

What type of PAV training do you provide to recipients of the PAV product? (Back)

The PAVs are very easy to install, operate, and maintain.  CSD can tailor the training provided to meet the needs of each location.  Areas to consider in setting up this training include: the number of persons to be trained, the technical expertise of those being trained, the number of PAVs to be installed, who is responsible for setting up and maintaining the advertising on the PAVs (if any), etc. Additional training can be made available at additional cost.

How much information and advertising contact can the PAV display? Who decides what is shown on the PAV? (Back)

The current PAV model can support more than an hour of content depending on formats and video quality, etc.  The agency where the PAV is installed decides what information and advertising content is shown.

Consumer (User) Questions

Can you please walk me through exactly what happens when one makes a credit card payment? (Back)

Once the credit card mode is enabled, you simply select the service you want and when prompted, insert your credit card.  Your card will be charged in accordance to the type and duration of your call.

How does the credit card option work? (Back)

The PAV will support payment from Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.  Additionally, the PAV can support payment from vendor specific smart cards.  These smart cards are prepaid cards set up solely for the PAV and are not “pre-paid phone cards” such as an AT&T prepaid calling card.

What Internet browser capabilities does the PAV have? (Back)

Full browsing capability is available, however, some locations prefer not to have full browser capability supported in order to maintain security for the PAV and prevent malicious programs from being either intentionally or accidentally loaded on the PAV, and to prevent inappropriate content from being loaded on the PAV.

Is e-mail available on the PAV? (Back)

Currently AOL, Gmail and Hotmail are supported.  Other email services may be added in the future.

Is the PAV compatible with other video devices? (Back)

Yes. The PAV is a standards based device that is fully compliant with H.323 and Sip for the transport protocol and both H.263 and H.264 for the video protocol along with four standard audio protocols.  The PAV is compatible with any other video device which is also compliant with these specifications.  Illustrative examples include the D-Link DVC-1000/2000 and the Sorenson VP-100/200, as well as NetMeeting.

Can the PAV use phone numbers to call other videophones? (Back)

At this time, a valid IP address is needed to make calls to videophones.  Currently the PAV supports point-to-point video calls by calling the associated IP address of the other device.  After the North American Numbering Plan is opened to VRS and videophone users can be assigned legitimate 10-digit telephone numbers, those 10-digit numbers can be used to dial the other devices.

The PAV is designed to work primarily on an IP network.  Video calls, whether VRS or point-to-point require an IP connection as do IP relay calls.  Traditional telephone calls (PSTN) can also be placed over the IP network utilizing a VOIP.

The PAV is also able to dial DNS names, such as videophone.csd.tv  instead of the IP address or phone number.

What kind of calling cards can the PAV use?

What other functions can the PAV be used for besides VRS Calls? (Back)

Plenty!  Although VRS calls are an important function of the PAV it does much, much more. PAV supports traditional telephone calls, IP relay calls for text users, video point-to-point and VRS calls.  Internet browsing, email and video email are also available for callers. The PAV can be used to display information for the patient/customer including advertising, information about the facility, announcements, and visual paging.  The PAV also protects the user’s privacy by not storing “last numbers called” that can be accessed by other users.  As an added benefit, if desired the installing agency can utilize the PAV to augment their security by accessing the video feed from the camera when the phone is not in use.

Does the PAV support AIM or other instant messaging software? (Back)

The PAV is designed for TTY to TTY calls.  Instant Messaging is not an option at this time.

Is the PAV media player capable of streaming video and connection to any IP TV? (Back)

Yes. In addition, the value added on our player is that it is able to store those videos instead of requiring continuous open bandwidth (streaming). For example, the daily news can be downloaded and then stored in the PAV for access the whole day.

How are the rates for different call types established? (Back)

VRS calls using the CSDVRS speed dial button are provided to the user free of charge.

The pricing for traditional voice telephone calls is subject to the tariffs approved by the local public utilities commission.  Standard TTY to TTY calls are normally billed at the same rate as standard calls.  Video point-to-point call rates are set by the installing agency.
